Come to Roedde House for a unique historical photography experience!

On Saturday February 12th, from 1 to 6 PM, we invite you to enjoy a unique historical photography experience at Roedde House Museum.

Take a step back into time to experience a photo session from the late 19th century!

We have invited local photographer Ian Azariah of Tintype Trike to come to Roedde House and share this historical photography process with our guests. Ian specializes in creating a type of photography called tintypes which was historically used in the late 19th century.

What is a Tintype or Ferrotype?

A Tintype is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of iron coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s. These portraits are one of a kind as the image can only be created a single time (very much like a polaroid).

Tintype portraits were at first usually made in a formal photographic studio, like daguerreotypes and other early types of photographs, but later they were most commonly made by photographers working in booths or the open air at fairs and carnivals, as well as by itinerant sidewalk photographers. Because the lacquered iron support (there is no actual tin used) was resilient and did not need drying, a tintype could be developed and fixed and handed to the customer only a few minutes after the picture had been taken.

Even without final varnishing, these portraits can easily last more than 200 years, so this is your chance to create an heirloom that will last generations!

Your Session at Roedde House

Your Victorian Portrait session here at Roedde House Museum will include a 4x5 tintype print for you to take home, as well as a full hour to explore historic Roedde House. Additional prints as well as 8x10 sized prints can be purchased as an add on with the photographer.

Each ticket includes you and 1 guest, so this is your chance for you and a loved one to have your image immortalized.

There will be a special antique photography exhibition with guest Peter Lowery, local historical photography collector and enthusiast, to answer all your questions about the historical photography process!

Each session is $85 and we have up to 6 time slots per hour. Space will be extremely limited so get your tickets early!
