Scary Christmas Stories: A Victorian Christmas Tradition

Join us in the historic Roedde House parlour as we gather together to indulge in a once-popular Victorian tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas! Two theatre actors, costumed and presenting as the characters Mr. and Mrs. Winchester, will read to the audience from ghost stories written in the late 1800s. To capture the authentic ghost story experience is to whisper it by candlelight, to feel the tendrils of the winter's chill reaching from the darkness outside the heath's glow.  These stories were meant to be shared in a cozy room on a chilly winter's night, so the restored 1893 home of the Roedde family makes for the perfect setting.

Tea and sweets will be served for a short intermission before audience members are invited back into the parlour for one last tale before Mr. and Mrs. Winchester send everyone off to their bleak, shadow-filled walk from the cozy parlour space to their cart, or home.

Roedde House Museum was built for the family of Gustav Roedde, one of Vancouver's first bookbinders, who lived in the home with his family from 1893 until 1924. The house has been restored and furnished to look as it did when the family was here during the late 1800s.

* Proof of vaccination and masks are mandatory for this event. Masks must be worn throughout the event, except for when audience members are partaking in refreshments during the designated break.

* Please ring the turn-key doorbell on the front door for entry.

*Give yourself plenty of time to find parking. There is paid parking at Broughton. Limited street parking is available on Robson and in the West End. If arriving by public transportation, the nearest skytrain station is Burrard, and we are on the #5 Robson bus route.
